The Cheshire town of Northwich lies in the Chester unitary authority at the confluence of the River Dane and River Weaver. The town is located 18 miles east of the city of Chester, and some 15 miles south of Warrington. The area has a rich history dating back before Roman times when it was known as Condate. In the middle of the 18th century the town hosted its own race meeting, with results from the three day meeting from Monday 9th to Wednesday 11th June 1755 recorded in the ‘Historical List of Horse races and Matches’ of 1755. On the opening day the £50 Purse was won by Mr Grosvenor’s Alderman who got the better of Sir Peter Leister’s more fancied Bonny Lass, while on the next day the 100 Guineas Plate was won by Mr Slaughter’s chestnut horse. Ten years later a two day meeting was held on Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th June 1765 when Lord Grosvenor’s Fop and Mr Coates’ Young David captured the principal races over the two days. The final meeting was staged at Crabtree Green just two years later on Wednesday 24th June 1767, with Young Statesman securing the main prize for Mr Clifton. Races continued at Crabtree Green well into the middle of the 19th century, but were no longer billed as Northwich Races.
